In Doc Rivers: The Inspiring Life and Leadership Lessons of One of Basketball's Greatest Coaches, you will learn the story of one of basketball's premier coaches, Doc Rivers. Doc Rivers is often lauded as one of the top coaches in the NBA, and with good reason. In his first season as the head coach of the Orlando Magic in 1999, Rivers took a team that was projected to finish last in the league to a near playoff birth. That "Heart and Hustle" Orlando Magic team would put Doc Rivers on the map.
Since that time, Doc has remained one of the most sought after coaches around the league. His most notable success as a coach came in 2008, as he led the Boston Celtics to their first championship since 1986. There are a number of key leadership lessons that can be learned from Doc Rivers, such as developing player relationships, motivating by challenging, and implementing a consistent system. Whether you're a basketball player or a coach looking for inspiration, this book will help you discover the incredible story of Doc Rivers and the many leadership lessons that can be learned from studying his success.

An excerpt from the book:
NBA coaches are known for being the best basketball strategists in the entire world of professional sports. No coach gets to the NBA if he has not mastered the basic X's and O's of basketball. However, a sound strategy is not the only way a coach succeeds in the NBA. A lot of other factors come into play. An NBA head coach should be able to lead his team through philosophies and other intangibles. Then there is also how the coach manages his rotations and maximizes his players' talents. The financial aspect of managing contracts is also one of the more challenging aspects of coaching in the NBA among others.
If anything, strategy might be the easier part of being a head coach in the NBA because there are several more other factors he has to take into consideration. Most head coaches would sometimes delegate the X's and O's to their assistants so as to focus on the other factors of being the primary voice of leadership of the team. A coach may be the brightest mind as far as strategy is considered but may fail in the other aspects that truly make him great.
One of the harder parts of being a head coach is how to handle the sheer amount of talent he has on his roster. There those that have not been blessed with an All-Star or two on his team. Such coaches rely more on team play and role delegation rather than on how a particular player can take control at any time. There are those that have multiple All-Stars that play well with each other and off one another to the point that chemistry no longer becomes an issue. The difficulty lies in handling one or more transcendent superstars on the team.
